This policy explains the privacy behaviour of Proofroom Cambridge, an Android application presented for Cambridge Historical Society Incorporated. It applies to version 1.0.0 of the installed app and its on-device features. It does not govern Cambridge Museum's separate website, collection catalogue, DigitalNZ, an email provider, an app store, the Android operating system, or another service a person may choose to use. Effective date: 11 August 2026.
Proofroom Cambridge is designed for adults, educators, volunteers, family companions, and general visitors who want to practise careful source observation. The app is not directed to children as an independent service and does not create child profiles. An adult remains responsible for deciding whether and how to use the material with a family or group, following venue instructions and appropriate cultural guidance.
The app provides fictional, offline exercises about observation, inference, context, photographic framing, maps, newspaper layout, oral-history listening, provenance, place comparison, visit preparation, collection etiquette, and evidence-aware writing. It is not an official collection database, exhibition guide, research-request portal, genealogy system, booking service, historical authority, recording tool, scanner, or conservation manual.
The app does not collect or transmit names, email addresses, phone numbers, account identifiers, contacts, precise or approximate location, photographs, documents, audio, video, browsing history, advertising identifiers, device identifiers, diagnostics, payment information, health information, or user-written content. The app has no server or network connection.
A small amount of app-created state may be stored only inside the app's private storage: Reduce Motion preference, selected fixed question categories, completed fictional examples, and the current proofing-table position. These selections do not require a name and are not transmitted. They are used only to restore the user's local experience.
Proofroom Cambridge does not provide free-text notes, family-tree records, personal histories, youth records, collection accession records, document storage, image capture, voice recording, interview transcripts, cultural-affiliation records, health records, or other sensitive-record fields. Users should not treat the fixed exercises as a place to record personal, culturally restricted, confidential, or collection-management information.
The app requests no Internet, location, camera, microphone, contacts, calendar, phone, Bluetooth, notification, storage, or advertising permission. All content needed for the exercises is packaged in the app. The Android package may contain an operating-system-generated signature permission used internally by Android; the app does not request or expose it as a user data permission.
There is no account, login, membership record, cloud identity, profile, password, or account-linked history in Proofroom Cambridge. Therefore an account-deletion process does not apply. Clearing the Question Tray or uninstalling the app removes app-created local state as described below.
The app contains no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting service, attribution system, telemetry, remote configuration, social SDK, behavioural profiling, tracking pixel, or third-party runtime SDK. It does not create an advertising profile or use content for personalised or targeted advertising.
Because the app does not collect or transmit personal information, it does not sell, rent, share, or disclose personal information to Cambridge Historical Society Incorporated, Cambridge Museum, advertisers, data brokers, analytics providers, or other organizations. No in-app social feed, public profile, messaging, or user-to-user disclosure feature exists.
The Source Desk contains offline citations so users can understand the basis and limits of the educational material. It does not open those sources inside the app. If a user independently visits a cited website or sends email using another application, that separate provider and the receiving organization process information under their own terms and privacy practices; Proofroom Cambridge does not receive the message or destination activity.
Fixed selections and preferences remain in the app's private local storage until the user clears them, clears the app's storage through Android settings, or uninstalls the app. There is no server-side copy and no publisher retention database associated with this app.
The Clear Tray control removes all Question Tray selections and resets completion state. Android settings can clear the complete local app storage, and uninstalling removes the installed app and its local state. Cloud backup and device-to-device transfer are disabled by the application configuration, although a device administrator or operating-system implementation may apply controls outside the app's authority.
Local selections are kept in Android's app-private storage and are not intentionally transmitted. No security method can protect a compromised, rooted, shared, or physically accessed device absolutely. Users should use device screen locking, install operating-system updates, and clear the app before transferring or disposing of a device when appropriate.
The app does not knowingly collect information from children, create youth profiles, enable adult-to-child messaging, publish participant information, or request location. If an adult uses the exercises with children, that adult controls the device and remains responsible for supervision, suitability, cultural respect, and compliance with the policies of any school, museum, archive, or community group.
The exercises use fictional or abstract sources and teach a method for holding questions open. They do not authenticate an object, establish provenance, resolve ownership, determine copyright, interpret culturally restricted material, give legal advice, or authorize handling. Users must follow collection staff instructions, rights-holder requirements, cultural authority, and qualified professional advice. Do not clean, repair, move, publish, or reproduce real material because of an app exercise.
This policy may be updated when app behaviour, law, or release arrangements change. A materially revised app policy will carry a new effective date and should match the public policy page for that release. Users may decline the app, avoid saving optional fixed selections, enable Reduce Motion, clear the Question Tray, clear app storage, or uninstall at any time.
